About the museum
The Provençal-style villa Les Lauriers roses stands in the heart of a six-hectare tree-filled park created by the writer Jean Aicard, who lived there until 1919. On his death he passed the estate on to his friend, the painter Paulin Bertrand. In 1960 the painter's widow bequeathed the property to the City of Toulon to create a museum; it now holds the “Musée de France” and “Maison d'écrivain” labels.
The tour of the rooms reveals the world of the author of “Maurin des Maures” and “Gaspard de Besse”. The winter garden, used for receptions, has walls decorated with texts and illuminations. The study and the library, which holds more than 5,000 volumes, show a reader of wide-ranging tastes. Visitors also discover Paulin Bertrand's studio and works, as well as a collection by the ceramicist Clément Massier.
