About the museum
The Musée des arts asiatiques de Toulon is housed in the Villa Jules Verne in the Mourillon district, facing the sea and near Fort Saint-Louis. The villa was occupied by Michel Verne, the writer’s only son. The city of Toulon acquired it in 1973, and it has housed Asian art collections since 2000.
Most of the pieces come from gifts or bequests made to the city by collectors, including Rothschild, Fauverge de French, Lalande and Jubiot. Many donors came from Toulon seafaring families, as numerous French expeditions, both scientific and military, set out from Toulon and returned there.
The permanent collections are arranged by geographic origin. Works and objects from China and Japan are on the second floor; pieces from Southeast Asia, India, Mongolia and Tibet are on the third floor. The first floor hosts temporary exhibitions and events.
