About the museum
The museum owes its existence to the generosity of Richard Anacréon (1907–1992), a bookseller and collector from the Haute Ville of Granville. Based in Paris, he opened the bookshop “l’Originale” in 1943, frequented by many writers and artists. In the 1980s, he gave his hometown around 280 artworks and 550 “truffées” editions (books enriched with dedications, drawings and letters), on the condition that a museum bear his name in his childhood neighborhood.
The museum opened in 1985 in the former Paul Bert school on Place de l’Isthme, within the ramparts, with a panoramic view of the seaside town. The entire Anacréon collection joined it upon his death in 1992.
The collections continue to grow through purchases, gifts and deposits, notably from the Musée national d’art moderne in 2002 and the Centre Pompidou in 2021. The permanent display, redesigned in March 2025, brings together paintings, drawings and sculptures from the 20th century around the themes of portrait and landscape, set in dialogue with books, manuscripts and correspondence. The holdings comprise about 3,000 objects.
