About the museum

The museum is housed on the first floor of the Couvent des Jacobins in Saint-Sever, a 13th-century building that later hosted cultural and community activities. It opened here in 2019 and holds the “Musée de France” label.

The route is chronological and interactive, from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, with archaeological objects and facsimiles. It suits adults as well as families.

The Paul Dubedat Gallo-Roman wing presents two local sites: the Gleyzia villa, with its 4th-century mosaics, and the Palestrion on the Morlanne hill, where about ten capitals were found in 1900. The abbey section describes the Benedictine monastery as a cultural and political centre of Gascony, with casts of capitals made during participatory workshops.

The Beatus rooms explain the 11th-century illuminated manuscript commissioned by Abbot Grégoire de Montaner, now held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, through workshops and digital displays.
