About the museum
The municipal museum of Grenade-sur-l'Adour opened in 1999. It gathers numerous testimonies on the Second World War period in the town and the Grenade area: the demarcation line, the German occupation, armed resistance and intelligence groups, and escape routes to the free zone.
The central event is that of June 13, 1944. On that day, a group of maquisards led by Jean-Louis Vielle, known as René, head of the local Resistance, intercepts a German column at the gates of the town. René Vielle is killed during the action. In reprisal, the Germans set fire to the town's main buildings and take fifty hostages. Seventeen people are deported, and eleven of them die in the camps.
In 1948, the town erected a memorial stele in front of the town hall bearing the names of the deportees. In 2022, the museum completed its route with explanatory panels that combine administrative documents, letters from deportees and testimonies.
