About the museum

The 34th Infantry Regiment was formed on January 17, 1625. It was garrisoned in Mont-de-Marsan from 1876 to 1997, alongside the 234th RI and the 141st RIT. At the start of the 20th century these regiments had a first museum near the city’s officers’ club; it left Mont-de-Marsan when the regiment was disbanded on December 31, 1921.

The present museum descends from an honor room inaugurated in the Bosquet barracks on September 16, 1994. When the regiment was disbanded in November 1997, the 34th RI’s Amicale (association) kept the room safe at members’ homes while waiting for a new space. The mayor of Mont-de-Marsan later promised that a museum would open in the barracks.

The museum now occupies the Solférino pavilion of the Bosquet barracks. Set up by the association’s volunteers, it preserves the memory of the Landais and Aquitaine people who served in these regiments, particularly during the two World Wars. It presents posters, flags, military equipment and documents, and is aimed at schoolchildren, history students and the general public.
