About the museum
The Musée de la course landaise is located in Bascons, in the Landes, next to the Notre-Dame de la Course Landaise chapel in the Bostens district. It is presented as the only museum devoted solely to this Gascon bull sport, in which an écarteur or sauteur faces the charge of a cow.
According to a tourist guide to the Landes, it was created in 1999 by the association of Friends of the Museum in a former manor house. The collection rests largely on the bequest of Raoul Laporterie, supplemented each year by donations from enthusiasts.
The route begins with a wall map showing the course landaise arenas of the Southwest, followed by a slideshow. The permanent exhibition combines explanatory panels, objects and authentic documents: early 20th-century postcards, portraits of the first champions, objects used in the practice, and posters from the late 19th century to the present. The museum also holds an important set of works by the caricaturists Cel le Gaucher and Gaston Remy.
Works in 2004 added a projection room and spaces for temporary exhibitions. Each year the museum took part in the Ascension festival, the Printemps des musées and the Journées du patrimoine. According to the town's website, it is currently closed for an indefinite period.
