About the museum
The museum occupies the former civil and military prison of the Blaye citadel, built in 1677 and converted into a bakery at the end of the 19th century. The building, known as La Manutention, still bears many traces of its past, including dungeons and bread ovens.
The collections were largely assembled between 1938 and 1968 by Paul Raboutet (1902–1968). They illustrate 7,000 years of Blaye's history: archaeological furniture found in the citadel and in the former Saint-Romain abbey, a model of the medieval castle, plans showing how the fortress evolved, and objects from daily life and from the bakery. There are also 18th- and 19th-century pharmacy jars and mementos of the captivity of the Duchess of Berry.
