About the museum

The Musée Mer Marine grew out of the passion for the sea of Norbert Fradin, a property developer and collector who assembled a large private collection linked to the maritime world. The foundation stone was laid in 2016 in the Bassins à flot district, in the presence of the then mayor. The museum opened to the public in June 2019.

The building was designed by architect Olivier Brochet. It evokes a ship with a pronounced bow, with exposed concrete and metal staircases that recall the industrial and port past of the district. It has no load-bearing walls and is organised around an atrium.

The route covers three levels. The first and second floors trace the history of navigation through boats, instruments and models. La Galerie presents French marine painting, with artists such as Vernet, Boudin, Monet, Marquet and Dufy. The top level, entitled Planète Océan, brings together contemporary art on marine life and environmental protection. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions.
