About the museum

The museum was founded in 1984 by former members of the Armée secrète de la Loire, forty years after the fighting that liberated the département in August 1944. It was fully renovated in 1999, with a modern and interactive display also designed for young visitors.

It is both a memorial to the battles of Estivareilles and the maquis of the region, and a place that sets contemporary history within the events of the 20th century. Objects, sound recordings, archive images, photographs and videos accompany the visit, which is aimed at the whole family.

The visit includes an area on the 20th century, a feature on Lucien Neuwirth, the honour hall of the Armée secrète de la Loire, a temporary exhibition room and an “Images et sons” room. A C215 street-art trail continues the visit in the village. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
