About the museum
The museum was founded in 1965 by enthusiasts of local history. It grew gradually through donations from collectors, in particular those of Madeleine Rousseau. From the 1970s onward, Daniel Pouget, the museum’s director and a keen traveller, added to the collections with objects brought back from his journeys.
The museum occupies a former priory in the historic heart of Saint-Rambert. Across nearly 2,000 m², it presents hundreds of works from Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas, along with objects related to the history of the Forez. It holds more than 9,000 objects from the five continents.
The permanent galleries are devoted, for example, to the Aboriginal peoples of Australia, to Indonesia and to the arts of West Africa. A distinctive feature of the museum: the storerooms are open to the public and show the inventory, study and restoration of the collections. The museum presents a new temporary exhibition every year.
