About the museum

The Château de Dieppe was built in the second half of the 15th century on the edge of the western cliff, some thirty meters above the town, to strengthen its defenses after the Hundred Years' War. It was enlarged over the centuries: an artillery terrace, which encloses the bell tower of the former Saint-Rémy church, was added around 1570–1586. The seat of the governors of Dieppe until the Revolution, it then became a prison. Listed as a historic monument in 1862, it was bought back by the town in 1905.

Since 1923 the château has housed the town museum. The collections cover a wide range of themes: fine arts, archaeology, ethnography, history and music. The museum holds one of the richest collections of ivory objects and sculptures in France. A room is devoted to Georges Braque.

The museum offers exhibitions, guided tours, family workshops, concerts, performances and lectures.
