About the museum
The museum was founded in 1823 by Jean-Baptiste Mathon. Before the war it occupied the third floor of the town hall of Neufchâtel-en-Bray. The building was destroyed by bombing on June 7, 1940, and almost all the collections were lost. André Durand, then curator, saved a small part of the holdings and gathered new objects, archives and documentation on local customs.
Since 1959, the museum has been housed in a half-timbered 16th-century house. Donations received since the 1960s have enriched the collections, including more than a hundred fireplace plaques found in the town's rubble. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
The route unfolds over several levels. It presents the rural ethnology of the Pays de Bray (agriculture, crafts, social rites), as well as furniture, glass, faience and pottery. The vaulted cellar is devoted to Neufchâtel cheese, and one floor houses a model of the fortified town.
