About the museum
The museum is located in Grainville-la-Teinturière, the village of which Jean de Béthencourt was lord. It is run by the association Jean de Béthencourt Normandie-Canaries and is on the Place du Marché.
The route tells the story of the expedition this Norman lord undertook in 1402, at his own expense, to conquer the Canary Islands. At that time the archipelago was known but had no lord. With the agreement of the King of Castile and the Pope, Béthencourt made himself master of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro, and sought to organize relations between Normans and islanders in an exemplary way.
The conquest had far-reaching consequences: in 1492 the Canary Islands served as a stopover for Christopher Columbus before his Atlantic crossing. The museum also introduces the Canary Islands of today, with which the village maintains close ties.
