About the museum
The Ordre de la Libération was established by General de Gaulle in 1940 to honour people and communities who contributed to the liberation of France. It has only one rank, that of Compagnon de la Libération (Companion of the Liberation), and a single decoration, the Cross of Liberation. In total, 1,038 people, 18 military units and 5 communes have received the distinction.
The Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération was created at the Invalides in 1970. It is dedicated to the Order and the Companions, fighters of Free France and the internal Resistance, as well as to people deported for resisting the Nazi occupation. It was completely renovated in 2016.
The collections consist mainly of objects and personal documents donated by the Companions themselves or by their families. More than 2,000 items are displayed across 1,200 m², around four themes: Free France, the internal Resistance, deportation and General de Gaulle.
Highlights include the uniforms of Jean Moulin and Marshal Leclerc, flags captured from the enemy, the weapons and insignia of the Companions, the first flags of the Free French Navy, drawings made in the concentration camps, as well as leaflets, newspapers and clandestine radio transmitters.
