About the museum
The Musée de la boulangerie de Bonnieux opened in 1983 on the initiative of the Conseil général de Vaucluse, in partnership with the bakers' union and the Chambre des métiers of the department. It occupies a 17th-century house that housed a bread oven until 1920.
The visit was spread over several levels. The ground floor showed breads and the tools for loading the oven and preparing the dough: kneading machines, proving baskets, sieves and shovels. The vaulted cellars displayed the tools and machines of the harvest. The first floor held archives on cereal cultivation, milling and the flour industry, as well as numerous moulds. The second floor explored the place of bread in society, its symbols and customs.
The museum has been closed since 2023 because of work on the collections; no reopening date has been announced.
