About the museum

The Château des Rohan in Mutzig is a 15th-century moated castle that became a bishop’s residence in 1669. Four cardinals of the Rohan family lived here between 1704 and 1789. Sold as national property during the Revolution, it was bought in 1803 by the Coulaux brothers, who set up a weapons factory in it. The town bought it in 1962 and restored it in the 1980s; today it houses a cultural centre with a theatre and cinema, as well as the municipal museum.

The weapons collection was assembled in the château in 1977; the museum reopened after restoration in 1987, and its current display was inaugurated on February 2, 1996. It presents firearms, armour, edged weapons and military headgear, including the Chassepot rifle and weapons made at the Mutzig factory.

On the ground floor are lapidary fragments, the history of the town, a model of the former Romanesque church, Gothic baptismal fonts and Roman and Merovingian remains. On the top floor a space is devoted to Neanderthal man: it presents a Middle Palaeolithic site, about 90,000 years old, discovered in Mutzig in 1993.
