About the museum
The Musée de la mémoire ouvrière, Mines et Mineurs de Provence is located at La Tuilière in Saint-Maime. It is run by the association L’Œuvre au Noir, which has been active since 1985 in preserving the memory of the area’s industrial past and the lives of its local population.
The route traces lignite extraction in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence basin between 1874 and 1949, within the broader context of local mining, which ran from 1817 to 1949. Testimonies from former miners, photographs and objects show working conditions, trade union organization, and life in the workers’ housing estate and the neighboring villages. The history of each individual mine also introduces the geology of the basin.
