About the museum
The Maison d’Histoire et de Mémoire d’Ongles, or MHeMO, opened in 2008 in a wing of the village château, which belongs to the municipality. The project grew from a wish to honor the Harki families, the residents who welcomed them, and Yvan Durand, who devoted his life to them. Historians and state services supported the initiative, and research was carried out in the departmental archives.
In September 1962, twenty-five Harki families, roughly half the village, arrived in Ongles. They were first housed in military tents, then in prefabricated buildings. After two years they left for Cannes, and a pre-training center for the sons of Harkis took their place.
The permanent exhibition is titled “Ils arrivent demain…” (“They are arriving tomorrow…”), a phrase taken from the mayor’s reply to his deputy when the families arrived. The full exhibition can also be viewed on a digital tablet.
