About the museum
The museum is housed in the fort of Bondues, also known as Fort Lobau, a defensive structure built in the 1880s to protect Lille. During the Second World War the German army used it as a depot and as an execution site: between March 17, 1943 and May 1, 1944, 68 resistance fighters from the region were shot there. At the end of the occupation, German troops bombed the site, of which only part remained. The commune bought back the fort in 1962; a memorial was inaugurated in 1965, and the courtyard where the executions took place in 1986.
The Musée de la Résistance opened on September 20, 1997. It traces the history of the Resistance in Nord-Pas-de-Calais during the Occupation. The permanent display has five rooms: the Souvenir, the Refus, the Courage, the Engagement and the Sacrifice.
The Souvenir room pays tribute to the 68 people who were shot. The other rooms present the regional context, concrete forms of resistance (leaflets, intelligence, escape networks, underground press), the miners' strike of 1941, and then repression, with a reconstructed cell and a camp scene. The museum is a municipal institution; it also offers a documentation centre, educational activities and a screening room.
