About the museum

At the end of the Second World War, General de Lattre de Tassigny launched the creation of a memorial site for the Troupes de marine. The project took shape in 1949, first at the École militaire, then at the Clignancourt barracks. In 1965 the memorial moved to Fréjus, where the corps has its headquarters. In 1979 the honor hall was converted into a museum, which opened in October 1981.

Labeled “Musée de France” since 2006, the museum holds a collection of more than 25,000 objects: uniforms, headgear, weapons, emblems, ethnographic souvenirs, paintings and decorations. It traces nearly four centuries of history, from the first marine infantry companies created under Richelieu to current operations, and also covers the history of overseas France.

Thanks to the support of the Friends of the Museum association, the floor area has doubled. After renovation and extension work, all exhibition spaces reopened on September 1, 2024.
