About the museum

The museum is run by the association Anciens et Amis de la Batellerie de Poses, founded on November 5, 1988 by Hubert Labrouche, a teacher, municipal councilor and later mayor of the commune from 1977 to 1995. He had asked that the commune buy the Fauvette, presented as the last river tug on the Seine.

The Fauvette was built in Cologne in 1928. It first worked for the Compagnie des Oiseaux on the Upper Seine, then between Paris and Rouen from 1946, and ceased operations in 1974. Converted into a pusher and then abandoned near Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, it was restored to its original state by volunteers, often former bargemen. Its engines ran again in 1991, and it was listed as a historic monument in 1992.

The Midway II, a Freycinet-type barge, was built in 1954 and carried sand, grain, flour or sugar until 1991. The association acquired it in 1992 and restored it until 1995; it opened to the public in June 1995. Its hold now houses an exhibition on the history of the Seine at Poses, the effect of the weir and locks on the river, the trade of the bargeman and village life.
