About the museum
The museum originates in the remains of the former abbey of Saint-Maur. The pharmacist Édouard Bourières carried out excavations there between 1858 and 1861 and gathered sculpted fragments. In the 1920s these pieces were housed in the Tour Rabelais. In 1927 the historical society Le vieux Saint-Maur obtained three rooms in the Villa Frot and handed its collections over to the town in 1933.
The town then developed a municipal museum with a fine arts section. It changed location several times: a former girls’ school, the former public baths on the avenue du Bac, and finally the restored Villa Médicis, where it opened on February 11, 1983. In the 1970s, the proximity of a lithography workshop shifted acquisitions towards prints, which led to the organisation of a printmaking biennale.
The collections bring together local history, archaeology, paintings, sculptures, Art Deco ceramics by Édouard Cazaux and prints. The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003. In September 2018 it was transferred to the Paris Est Marne&Bois territory, which now presents it as closed to the public.
