About the museum
The museum was born from the initiative of former Resistance fighters and deportees from the Haute-Garonne, who founded a memorial association in 1974 to create a museum on the Second World War in Toulouse. The Haute-Garonne departmental council opened it in 1994, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Liberation of Toulouse, at 52 allée des Demoiselles.
After two years of works, the museum reopened in February 2020 with a redesigned museography. The ground floor houses the reception and the temporary exhibition rooms; the first floor is devoted to the permanent collection and to a space for reflection on contemporary struggles and resistance; the garden level houses an auditorium, a documentation centre open by appointment only and a space for school groups.
The permanent collection traces the events of the Second World War in the Haute-Garonne through the life stories and commitment of Resistance fighters and deportees. The storerooms hold nearly 30,000 objects, photographs, archives, posters, leaflets and drawings, coming almost exclusively from donations by private individuals. The garden behind the building contains a memorial area with two stelae: one honours the deportees from France, the other the prisoners of war from the Rawa-Ruska camp.
