About the museum

The Château du Crest-Cherel is a former medieval fortified manor house (maison forte), which around 1248 passed to the Becket de Hollande family, who then took the name Crécherel. The building passed to the Geny family in 1740; their descendants handed it over to the commune in 1921. Heavily remodelled since the Middle Ages and reduced in height, it at times housed nursery classes and municipal employees.

In the 1970s, the château seemed destined for oblivion. The municipality decided to restore it and to reserve it for the Musée d’Arts et Traditions Populaires du Val d’Arly, then a section of the Amicale Laïque. The restoration took about ten years, and archaeological excavations were carried out from 1978 to 1980 with academics from Lyon.

Today known as the Musée du Patrimoine Rural d’Ugine, the museum presents over 2,000 objects across more than 1,200 m². Twelve themed spaces include harness-making (bourrellerie), the armoury, agriculture, carpentry, the living room, the school of times past, the dairy room and shoemaking. The entrance hall displays traditional costumes of the Val d’Arly and a mechanical piano.
