About the museum

The Maison Rouge was built in 1397 in Conflans for Pierre Voisin, secretary to the Count of Savoy, Amédée. It owes its name to its brick, a material inspired by Italian palaces. The building is protected as a historic monument. It served successively as a private house, a barracks and then a hospice.

In 1936, for the centenary of the town of Albertville, the Société des Amis du Vieux Conflans decided to set up a museum there. A room in the hospice was fitted out to create this “musée savoyard.” The exhibition was initially conceived as temporary, but its success led to it being kept. The museum then expanded until it occupied the whole building, and it received the designation “Musée de France.”

The permanent exhibition tells the story of Albertville and its surroundings, from Gallo-Roman antiquity to the early 20th century. The route is organised into thematic areas: Antiquity, the 18th and 19th centuries, sacred art in Savoy, folk art and daily life, agriculture and trade, and the first skiing equipment.
