About the museum

The museum originates in the gift made in 1929 by Louis Féron (1848–1929), an entrepreneur and politician from Yvetot, a keen horseman and art lover. During his lifetime he had assembled nearly 300 statuettes, medallions and ivory objects, mostly made from marine animals and carved by craftsmen from Dieppe or bought from local dealers.

He also bequeathed ceramics, terracottas, paintings and a library of about a thousand volumes. Among the items are figures of Polletais, the Norman fishermen of Dieppe's Pollet district, terracottas by the sculptor Graillon, ivories depicting figures from French history, and faience from Rouen, Lille and Nevers. It is the second-largest ivory collection in Seine-Maritime after Dieppe's.

As a municipal museum of the town of Yvetot, it holds the “Musée de France” label. Since its opening, gifts from individuals and deposits from Customs and the State have enriched the collections, and the museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions.
