About the museum

The museum is set up on the upper floor of the shop of the jewellery house Trabbia Vuillermoz in Mijoux, in the Haut-Jura. The jewellers of the house share their expertise there and present the work of the lapidary, who cuts and polishes precious, semi-precious and ornamental stones, with the exception of diamond.

Lapidary work is a traditional craft in the Haut-Jura. All the old tools on display come from this region. Their equipment is simple but very precise. The workbench was placed near a window to make use of daylight, as in most Jura farmhouses in the 17th century, according to the jewellery house.

The route shows the transformation from rough stone to cut gem. A video explains the origins of the trade and the stages of cutting: choosing the part of the stone to enhance, pre-shaping, cutting and polishing. On the way down, a direct view into the workshop shows the jewellery house’s current work.
