About the museum

The collection was born in 1867, when Dr. Lailler, a physician at the Saint-Louis hospital, asked the modeler Jules Baretta to reproduce skin lesions from life. These casts were used to train doctors in dermatology and offered a more vivid aid than drawings. Baretta made around 2,500 pieces; his successors continued the work until the last cast, in 1958.

The museum building was designed by the architect Gustave-Léon Vera. It was inaugurated on August 5, 1889, at the opening of the first international dermatology congress, and also housed a library, a consultation room and a modeling workshop. The ensemble was meant to give a modern image of the French school of dermatology.

The collection today comprises 4,952 pieces in four groups: the general collection, the Péan collection (615 casts), the Parrot collection (88 pediatric casts) and the Fournier collection (442 casts on syphilis). It has been listed as a historic monument since 1992. The neighboring Henri Feulard library also holds watercolors and lithographs of skin diseases.
