About the museum
The Musée Bargoin opened in 1903 in a neoclassical building in central Clermont-Ferrand. Until 2024 it displayed non-European textile collections as well as archaeological collections from the Clermont basin and the Puy-de-Dôme département.
In 2025 a major collections project began: cleaning, conservation, digitisation and repackaging, to prepare the transfer of storage to a new conservation centre. Notable pieces include the equestrian statue of Jupiter trampling a serpent-legged monster, found at Églisneuve-près-Billom, acquired in 2018 and restored in 2024. The room of the Source des Roches sanctuary has also been renovated.
The museum has been closed for renovation since July 31, 2026. Afterwards it will be devoted to the archaeology and history of the region, while the textiles will move to the Musée d’art Roger-Quilliot. During the closure some activities continue off-site, at the former Bibliothèque Lafayette.
