About the museum
The museum was inaugurated on April 18, 1994 in Chamalières. The idea came from Jean Bac, then president of the Fédération nationale des déportés et internés résistants et patriotes, who launched the project in 1985. A museum association founded in 1988 originally ran it.
Since 2018 it has been under the responsibility of Clermont Auvergne Métropole. It occupies about 134 m² at 7 place de Beaulieu.
The route is chronological and thematic. It follows the Second World War at local, national and international level, from the rise of Nazism to the Liberation, covering everyday life, the Resistance, collaboration, internment and deportation. The collections include equipment and uniforms of resistance fighters, uniforms and objects of deportees, photographs, newspapers, and objects from the American and German armies. The museum also presents figures linked to the region, such as Emmanuel d'Astier de La Vigerie, Jean Cavaillès and Alexandre Varenne.
