About the museum
The museum occupies a 12th-century Romanesque chapel on the church square in Marsac-en-Livradois. The building comprises a nave of two barrel-vaulted bays and a semi-domed apse; a 15th-century pentagonal turret houses a spiral staircase.
In 1644, the villagers asked Joachim d’Estaing, Bishop of Clermont, for permission to found a confraternity of pénitents blancs under the title of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The confraternity disappeared during the Revolution, was revived under the Restoration and remained active until 1900.
The museum presents a collection of procession emblems and religious objects, which it describes as unique in France. A retrospective shows how a service unfolds, and a diorama recreates the Ténèbres procession, with sacks and hoods.
