About the museum
The Château de Martainville was built in 1485 for Jacques Le Pelletier, a shipowner and merchant from Rouen. It is one of the rare examples of early Renaissance architecture in Normandy, and it has kept the original layout of its rooms. It is a listed historic monument.
The Musée des Traditions et Arts Normands was founded there in 1961. It belongs to the Seine-Maritime Departmental Council and holds the “Musée de France” label. The visit can extend to the dovecote, the bread oven, the gardens and the outbuildings.
The collections present regional furniture from the 15th to the 19th century, reconstructed interiors of Norman farmhouses, and everyday objects. The top floor is devoted to Norman costumes, headdresses and jewelry. One room displays Normandy's popular musical instruments.
