About the museum

The Bois-Guilbert estate was founded in 1620 by Charles Le Pesant and has remained in the same family ever since. The pavilion and chapel date from 1625, the present château from 1780, built on the foundations of an older manor house. The château was also the childhood home of the economist Pierre Le Pesant de Boisguilbert, which earned the estate the “Maison des illustres” label in 2013.

In 1983, sculptor and landscape artist Jean-Marc de Pas inherited the château. He then conceived a sculpture garden open to the public across the park’s seven hectares. Between 1988 and 1995, he carried out the main layouts and plantings, including a boxwood labyrinth, a circle of birch trees, a living cloister of hornbeam hedges and a circle of sequoias. Nearly 10,000 trees and shrubs have been planted since.

Seventy of his works now line a poetic walk through several landscaped areas. An association founded in 1993 manages the garden and shares it with the public. It received the “Jardin remarquable” label in 2014 and welcomes around 15,000 visitors a year.
