About the museum
The Musée pyrénéen de Niaux was founded in 1982 by Max Déjean, after five years of collecting and research. It opened on June 21, 1982, and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022. It reopened to the public on May 19, 2021.
It brings together several thousand authentic objects, arranged by theme, which illustrate daily life in the Ariège Pyrenees. The objects are accompanied by numerous photographs, figures and reconstructions.
The route covers pastoral life, means of transport, grain and bread-making, the school of 1900, traditional trades, old toys, religious art, Ariège glassmaking, ironwork, furniture and household objects. The museum also has an important collection of “crespal” vessels, containers hollowed out of tree trunks, including a rare cupboard carved from a huge fir tree.
