About the museum
The Saint-Louis chapel was built in 1683, under Louis XIV, for the Catholic soldiers of the fortified town of La Petite-Pierre. The Musée du Sceau alsacien has been housed there since 1979; it was founded by sigillographer Charles Haudot.
It presents the history of Alsace, France and Europe through seals: about 2,000 original seals and documents, several hundred facsimiles, and reproductions of coats of arms and banners. The seals evoke, among others, emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, popes, bishops, religious and chivalric orders, guilds, the Jewish community, towns and the Decapolis.
A neighboring museum devoted to folk arts and traditions and to Springerle is its annex.
