About the museum
The museum was founded in 1938 for the centenary of Marshal Mouton’s death. In January 1941 it was moved to Germany as war booty, and many objects were lost. It reopened in 1948.
It pursues three aims: to preserve the military and historical past of Phalsbourg, to present the writers Erckmann-Chatrian, and to show the life and traditions of the region, with costumes and everyday objects.
The collections, made up mainly of gifts from private individuals, include French and foreign uniforms, edged and firearms, military equipment, documents on Erckmann-Chatrian and regional costumes. Since 2007, the museum has also housed the restored circumcision bench from the Phalsbourg synagogue.
