About the museum
The Gallo-Roman Museum of Sisteron is housed in the Hôtel d’Ornano in the medieval old town. It invites visitors to travel back to Segustero, a Roman city at an important crossroads on the Via Domitia. It holds the “Musée de France” designation.
The permanent display presents the archaeological collections through a thematic trail on funerary practices in antiquity. Visitors see architectural decoration, everyday objects and statuary, as well as a group from a mausoleum built by a wealthy family of the High Empire and a substantial set of finds from the excavations of the Bevons mausoleum.
The building also hosts temporary exhibitions. The museum is located in the basement, in subdued lighting, with explanatory films. It is one of the stops on the Route du Temps of the Haute-Provence Geopark, which starts in Sisteron.
