About the museum
The Musée en Florentinois is one of the first cantonal museums in the Yonne département. It was founded in 1877 by Dr Boussard to spread popular education by showing in reality what people had only seen in books. It was then housed in a 17th-century building and open every Sunday.
The building fell into disrepair and was destroyed in the winter of 1942, and the collections were dispersed. From 1982 the museum reopened in the former post office. It soon became too small, because local residents brought in many objects from their past lives.
A major extension project began in 2012. The museum officially reopened on July 21, 2014, thanks in particular to its main patron, Jean Millot, who died in 2015. Today it is the last cantonal museum still active in the Yonne.
The first route tells the story of the Florentinois from prehistory to the 20th century and leads to a room devoted to the works of Jean Millot. The second presents objects from rural and craft life, two interactive pieces of furniture for children, antique musical instruments, tools and maps. An audiovisual room and a room for temporary exhibitions complete the building.
