About the museum
Captain Claude Noisot (1787–1861), a grenadier of the Imperial Guard and a great admirer of Napoleon I, founded the museum and the park in Fixin that bear his name. The museum building is a replica of the house where the emperor lived during his stay on the island of Elba, to which Noisot had followed him.
Noisot gathered souvenirs of the Napoleonic wars there: objects, documents, paintings and statues. The museum was inaugurated on September 19, 1847 by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, then President of the Republic and future Emperor Napoleon III.
In the park, Noisot created the “Clos Napoléon” and in 1847 commissioned a bronze statue from his friend, the sculptor François Rude of Dijon, entitled “Napoléon s’éveillant à l’immortalité” or “Le Réveil de Napoléon”. It shows the emperor chained to his rock on Saint Helena, coming back to life to free himself. The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003, and the site is listed.
