About the museum

The partly Gothic building dates from the early 16th century. From 1599 until the Revolution, it served as the residence of the vidame of the bishop of Châlons. Claude Joseph Garinet bought it in 1800; it then passed to his son Jules Garinet, a scholar and collector who installed a cabinet of curiosities there.

Jules Garinet bequeathed the house to the City of Châlons in 1897. It is considered a rare example of a collector's residence whose furniture and works have remained in their original places.

The collections include paintings from the Northern, French and Italian schools from the 14th to the 19th century, drawings and prints, sculptures from antiquity to the 19th century, and decorative arts: bronzes, enamels, faience and porcelain. On the third floor, a “musée imaginaire des monuments français” brings together 98 models of churches, cathedrals and town halls made in the 19th century by Dr. Mohen.
