About the museum

The museum was founded in 1992 on the initiative of health officials, with the support of the heritage department of the Isère Département and the CHU Grenoble. It is located on the northern site of the hospital, in the former chapel of the Asile des vieillards. An association runs it in cooperation with the CHU.

Its mission is to inventory, collect and preserve the medical and hospital heritage as well as the collective memory of the hospital. The collections include many medical objects, photographs, books and medical journals, as well as antique furniture. The museum also contributes to the inventory of hospital heritage.

The museum organizes temporary exhibitions built from its collections and from the testimonies of hospital staff, both current and retired. They present the hospital not only as a place of care but also as a place of life. The latest, “Enfanter” (Giving Birth), looked at the evolution of maternity practices at the Grenoble hospital and closed in May 2026.
