About the museum

The museum occupies the family home of the academic painter Ernest Hébert (1817–1908) in La Tronche. The artist stopped there during his travels in Italy, or stayed a few months, usually at the end of summer. The two-and-a-half-hectare estate has kept the atmosphere of a family home, with its furniture and many mementos.

The museum opened in 1979. From the outset it has had a dual purpose: to make 19th-century art better known through the collections devoted to Hébert, and to present contemporary artists, both emerging and established. It is part of the network of museums of the Isère Département.

The visit covers the house, a permanent exhibition on the painter’s training, works and studio, and the park. The park combines an Italian garden and an English garden, with fountains, pools and sculptures. The gardens are listed as “remarkable” and recall the artist’s Italian memories.
