About the museum
The museum was founded in 1882 by Victor Jeanneney. It was first set up in a chapel of the former Annonciades convent, then moved to the town hall in 1938. In 1981 it found its present home in the former Ursuline convent, a building dating from 1680 that was renovated for the occasion to distribute the space better and let in more light. An archaeology section opened in 1964.
Jean-Léon Gérôme, born in Vesoul in 1824 and died in Paris in 1904, gave several of his works to his hometown during his lifetime, and his family donated others after his death. The museum, long known as the Musée Georges-Garret, has borne the artist's name since December 4, 2024, the year of the bicentenary of his birth.
The fourteen rooms are spread over two levels. The first is devoted to archaeology, with the most important regional collection of Gallo-Roman funerary stelae. The second presents fine arts, with paintings and sculptures by Gérôme, ranging from ancient history to the contemporary Orient, as well as artists from the region and pupils of the painter.
