About the museum
Coal mining began in Ronchamp in the mid-18th century and continued for two centuries, until the mines closed permanently in 1958. The museum's collections were assembled by Dr. Marcel Maulini, a former mine doctor at Ronchamp, who for nearly thirty years gathered donations from former miners, mainly tools and lamps used underground.
The museum opened on September 26, 1976, founded by Marcel Maulini, who conceived it as an ecomuseum: a place where the mining community could recognize itself and understand the meaning of its work. It became the property of the town of Ronchamp in 1992.
The displays are spread over two floors. The first floor presents a large collection of tools and objects, photographs and donations from miners, and evokes the trade. The second floor shows the presence of a Polish community in Ronchamp and the daily life of miners in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum has been temporarily closed since 2021 for a rehabilitation and extension project, and work is currently under way.
