About the museum
From the mid-19th century, Fontenoy-le-Château became a renowned centre of white embroidery, a luxury handicraft sold to the royal courts of many countries. Embroiderers, often working from home, made linen and trousseau pieces for embroidery houses that handled sales.
The activity declined in the 20th century until the last embroidery office closed in 1976. The museum opened shortly afterwards, at the end of the 1970s, to preserve the memory of this craft. It is run by an association.
It occupies an 18th-century house. Visitors can see embroideries made on the frame and embroidery equipment: frames, flat looms, embroiderers’ carafes and sewing machines. An annex room is devoted to metalworking in the Côney valley, where forests and water powered forges from the 18th to the 20th century, with some objects from local heritage.
