About the museum
The museum opened in 1986 in Tergnier at the initiative of former resistance fighters. Among them, Étienne Dromas, head of the Laon arrondissement group of the Forces françaises de l’intérieur, wanted to pass on the history of the Resistance and deportation to younger generations. The General Council of the Aisne département financed the renovation of the building. The museum is run by the Association des Amis du Musée and is located on Place Carnegie, a square listed as a historic monument.
The permanent route covers the period from Hitler's rise to power to Marshal Pétain's intervention on June 17, 1940, then the appeal of June 18, the birth and actions of the Resistance, daily life under the Occupation, repression and deportation. Areas are devoted to air operations and parachute drops, the Forces françaises libres, the landings and the Liberation.
The exhibition is complemented by objects including a Beechcraft C.45 aircraft, a locomotive and an R-35 tank. In October 2005, a 300 m² extension added a conference, temporary exhibition and screening room, as well as a media library and a documentation centre. The museum also offers workshops for school groups, for example on daily life under the Occupation.
