About the museum

The Musée d'Art Roger-Quilliot occupies the buildings of a former Ursuline convent in Montferrand. The site previously housed the Cour des aides de Montferrand, founded in 1557. The nuns settled there in 1638 and had a chapel built, consecrated in 1706. After the Revolution the premises served as a seminary, during the First World War as a military hospital, and until 1982 as a gendarmerie.

The buildings have been listed as historic monuments since 1986. The architects Adrien Fainsilber and Claude Gaillard converted them into a museum built around a central atrium, covered by a large glass roof designed by the engineer Peter Rice. The museum opened in 1992 as the Musée des Beaux-Arts and was renamed in 1999 after Roger Quilliot, mayor of the city from 1973 to 1997 and initiator of the project.

The collections, built up since the mid-19th century, include paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, graphic arts and textiles from the Middle Ages to the present, notably holdings from the Musée Bargoin and the Musée du Ranquet. In 2025 the non-European textile collections of the Musée Bargoin joined the MARQ. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
