About the museum

The Les Secrets du Chocolat museum belongs to the Schaal house, an Alsatian chocolatier that can look back on more than 150 years of expertise. The company follows the process from bean to indulgence: it owns its own cocoa plantations in Ecuador and hazelnut plantations in France, and its chocolates are made in Strasbourg. The museum, the shop and the restaurant are all on one site in Geispolsheim, south of Strasbourg, 250 metres from the Véloroute de l’Ill.

The route is designed as a sensory immersion over about 250 m². It tells the story of the Schaal and Burrus families, pioneers of quality chocolate, takes visitors from Ecuador to Alsace to discover where the ingredients come from, and explains the stages of chocolate making in a playful, interactive and indulgent way. The texts and videos are translated into English and German, and there are videos for children.

Workshops then let visitors step into the role of a chocolatier: moulding, decorating and personalising their own creations, from age 7. The site also includes a 180 m² shop, a restaurant serving an all-you-can-eat sweet buffet, and packages for groups and companies, such as a meal in an Orient Express carriage for groups of 20 or more.
