About the museum

La Métairie, an isolated farm in the Roume valley about four kilometres from the centre of Banyuls-sur-Mer, was a place where the sculptor Aristide Maillol liked to work and rest. In 1964, his remains were transferred there and placed beneath his 1905 sculpture “La Méditerranée”.

After the artist’s death, the house remained empty and deteriorated. Dina Vierny, Maillol’s last model and muse, and the commune of Banyuls made it possible to save and restore it. A small Maillol museum opened to the public at the end of 1994.

The museum is run by the Fondation Dina Vierny, which also founded the Musée Maillol in Paris, and holds the “Maisons des Illustres” label. It displays bronzes and terracottas of female figures, lithographs, drawings, paintings and ceramics. The dining room and kitchen from the Marly-le-Roi studio, as well as the artist’s workshop, can also be seen. Temporary exhibitions on 20th- and 21st-century art are held every year.
